Sports Photography & Faces
"Several scientific studies have shown that the difference between high-level and low-level teams primarily depends on the continuous intensity with which the team can sustain prolonged play times."
Intensity is simply defined as the level of effort exerted.
Taking sports and action photos can often capture facial expressions that are quite different from those seen in portraits. And, I know that athletes sometimes find these expressions less desirable.
Perhaps we should view this differently. I love capturing portraits and strive to capture the most flattering and personality-highlighting expressions. However, in sports and action photography, I aim to capture INTENSITY. I believe that capturing intensity represents the level of effort exerted by the athlete... which I also refer to as "heart."
To me, a less than desirable facial expression reflects the level of exertion (i.e. intensity). That intensity is the result of years of hard work, dedication, and sacrifice. Intensity is earned and should be worn as a badge of honor.
